Sustainability & Community Impact
Our Pledge to Protect the Priceless Heritage of Komodo
The Komodo National Park is a global treasure. Its rugged islands, vibrant coral reefs, and unique biodiversity—including the legendary Komodo dragon—are irreplaceable. At Komodo Yacht Tour, we see ourselves not as tour operators, but as custodians. We believe that it is our profound responsibility to operate in a way that protects this fragile ecosystem and benefits the local communities who call this region home. Our sustainability policy is not a marketing initiative; it is a core, non-negotiable part of our operational DNA. This commitment is woven into every tour we design and every decision we make.
Environmental Commitments: Beyond ‘Leave No Trace’
We adhere to a strict environmental code of conduct that meets and exceeds the regulations set by the Komodo National Park Authority.
- Zero Ocean Discharge Policy: All our yachts are equipped with waste treatment systems. Absolutely no greywater, blackwater, or solid waste is discharged into the sea. All waste is properly contained and disposed of at designated facilities in Labuan Bajo.
- Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: We have completely eliminated single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags from our operations. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles, and we use filtered water dispensers onboard. All provisioning is done using reusable containers.
- Reef-Safe Practices: We provide complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to all our guests and educate them on its importance. Our captains and guides are trained in responsible anchoring techniques, utilizing designated mooring buoys wherever possible to prevent anchor damage to coral reefs.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. We partner with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan, a verified carbon credit project (VCS), to calculate and offset the emissions from our yacht operations. We offer guests the option to easily offset their flights as well.
- Sustainable Sourcing: Our onboard chefs prioritize sourcing ingredients from local organic farms and sustainable fishing communities in and around Labuan Bajo, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy.
Community Empowerment: Investing in People
Sustainable tourism is about people as much as it is about the planet. We are committed to ensuring that our presence provides tangible, long-term benefits to the local communities of Flores.
- Local Employment Priority: We are proud that over 85% of our crew and on-the-ground staff are hired from local villages in the West Manggarai Regency. We provide extensive training in hospitality, safety, and guiding to create sustainable career paths, not just jobs.
- Fair Wage and Benefits: All our employees receive a fair, living wage that is significantly above the regional minimum. They are also covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (national social security and health insurance), providing a crucial safety net for them and their families.
- Supporting Local Enterprises: We actively partner with local businesses, from the family-owned workshops that supply our traditional woven textiles to the community-run cooperatives that provide fresh produce. This ensures that tourism revenue circulates within the local economy.
- Community Development Fund: A portion of the revenue from every tour is allocated to our Community Development Fund. This fund supports educational initiatives in remote villages like Papagarang and Rinca, focusing on waste management education and providing school supplies.
