April – May
The dry season settling in. The hills still hold their green from the rains and the seas have calmed. Clear enough for everything, quiet enough to feel early. If you want Padar photogenic rather than parched, this is the window.
Month by month
April to November is the dry season and the safe answer. But August, September and February are three different trips, and which one suits you depends on what you came for.

The best time for a Komodo yacht tour is April to November, the dry season, with August the clearest and calmest month and September to October the best balance of good weather against thinner crowds.

This compares two seasons, not two operators. Both are sailed; the green season simply asks for flexibility in return for having the park to yourself.
Three reasons people pick a month, and what actually governs each one.
The hour matters far more than the month. Dragons are cold-blooded: 6am to 10am is their active window, and after ten they go into the shade and stay there. Between one and four in the afternoon you are unlikely to see one moving at all. Sleeping in the park is what buys you that morning.
Present at Karang Makassar all year. Our own guides put the peak at different months, which tells you how weak the seasonal signal is — the reliable variables are the tide and the time of day, so the boat gets you there on a slack window in the morning rather than on a particular date.
August gives you the clearest skies and the sharpest light; the green season gives you cloud, colour and empty foregrounds. Padar at sunrise works in both. Choose which picture you actually want before you choose the month.
Whichever month you pick, the boat should be at Padar before six and at a manta site on the tide. That sequencing is the difference between a good trip and a busy one.
November. On the operator's own booking data it is the quietest month of the year, running about eight times fewer bookings than August. The reason people avoid it is the rising rain probability — which is real, and mostly arrives as an afternoon shower rather than a lost day.
What you get in exchange is the calmest water of the whole year. Winds fall to their annual low, anchorages go glassy, and popular sites that hold a queue in August hold nobody. If the sea makes you nervous, November is the kindest month on the water and the hardest to sell.
We are not going to pretend it is a better month than September. It is a trade: you accept some cloud and the possibility of a wet afternoon, and in return you get a park that is essentially empty and a boat that barely moves at anchor.

Most people arrive with dates they cannot move. Send us the window you actually have and we will tell you what conditions look like inside it, which boats are free, and whether shifting by a week is worth it.
