What two nights aboard actually looks like
A proven framework, not a fixed schedule. The captain moves it around swell, tide and light.
Day one · Kelor, Rinca, Kalong
Board mid-morning after the hotel transfer. A checkout snorkel at Kelor, lunch under way, then a ranger-led trek on Rinca in the cooler part of the afternoon. Anchor off Kalong for dusk, when tens of thousands of flying foxes leave the island. Dinner on deck.
Day two · Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point
Up before five for the climb to the Padar viewpoint — the reason to be on a boat rather than in a hotel. Breakfast back aboard, Pink Beach mid-morning, then a drift snorkel at Manta Point where reef mantas hold over the cleaning station. A quiet bay for the second night.
Day three · Kanawa, then home
A last snorkel over the reef at Kanawa, lunch under way, alongside in Labuan Bajo early afternoon with the transfer waiting.
Dragon sightings on Rinca are highly probable but never guaranteed — they are wild animals, and rangers track them rather than schedule them.

The rate is for the boat. There is no per-head surcharge underneath it.
Why a phinisi, and not a motor yacht
A phinisi is a two-masted Indonesian sailing ship built by the Konjo of South Sulawesi. UNESCO inscribed the boatbuilding tradition on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017.
The fleet keeps the hull and rig and modernises everything else: air-conditioned cabins, en-suite bathrooms, a proper galley. You get the deck space and the silhouette without giving up a bed you can sleep in.
It also sits well in this park. Komodo National Park covers 1,733 square kilometres and has been protected since 1980; a boat that anchors quietly in a bay overnight is a better instrument for it than one built to get somewhere fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which length should I book?
- Two nights if you can. One night gets you Padar at sunrise and the dragons, which is the core of it. Three nights is for people who want the northern sites and time to stop moving — it is the better trip, but the second night is where most of the value lands.
- How fit do I need to be?
- Moderately. The Padar climb is the hardest thing on the itinerary — 30 to 45 minutes up a made path and stairs, in the dark, before sunrise. The dragon treks are a flat two to four kilometres over an hour or two. Everything else happens from the boat.
- Are dragon sightings guaranteed?
- No, and any operator promising one is guessing. Sightings on Rinca and Komodo are highly probable — rangers are expert trackers and the animals gather near the stations — but they are wild and their movement follows weather and feeding.
- Is there internet on board?
- Starlink is fitted across seven of the nine owned vessels, so most departures have working internet inside the park. It is satellite: expect it to slow under load and drop in a squall. Ask which vessel you are on if it matters.
- What is not included?
- The park entrance fee of IDR 700,000 per person, crew gratuities, travel insurance, flights to Labuan Bajo, and diving — which is quoted separately at USD 50 to 80 per dive because it needs certified dive staff and compressor time.
- When is the best time to sail?
- April to November. September to November tends to give the clearest water; July and August have the best weather and the most other boats. December to March the park stays open but expect afternoon showers and swell.
